Rice Bowls: fighting world hunger
I recently moved back home from college. One of the first days home, I walked into my brother’s room to see a rice bowl. I picked it up thinking it was such a cool piggy bank. My brother explained it was for a charity my church was working with. I looked into it so more after our conversation. I think it’s a great way for people to give and do something for others. Formed in 1980, Rice Bowls is a non-profit organization that raises money to fight world hunger. The funds received by Rice Bowls goes directly to their partner orphanages located in India, Haiti, and South Africa. Rice bowls is an easy way for organizations such as a church, school, or college dorm to help fight hunger in a practical way.
When an organization signs up with Rice Bowls, the rice bowl piggy banks are sent along with information about how to best set up the fund raiser. The bowls get taken and filled with loose change. The bowls are then returned when filled or when the organization sets a return date for its members. Then the money collected is counted and a check is written to Rice Bowls for the amount of the money collected. The bowls on average contain around thirty dollars. I’m excited to see how much my church and community raises. I found out we have a something like 700 or 800 rice bowls floating around. It’s always a blessing to see people acting on their faith and this is such a simple way to do it. I was encouraged by this and hope perhaps I may have sparked some people’s interest to get involved.
